زبان دراز
zuban daraz
big mouth, rude, arrogant
Classical Persian
"zuban" means "tongue", from the Middle Persian (Pahlavi) word uzwān or zafān, rooted in the Proto-Iranian hižwaHs and the Proto-Indo-Iranian j́ij́ʰwáHs. "daraz" means "long", from Classical Persian. Literally translates to "long-tongued".
The name of your website reminded me of my grandmother. She used to say that any woman who says anything against social norms is considered Zuban Daraz in our society. As I have grown up, I have realized the wisdom of her words.
My mother in law wanted me to use only freshly peeled desi garlic in the cooking. I was a working mum with two kids. I did not have time to peel small garlic pieces every day. She also did not allow me to peel them in bulk and make a paste. One day when she scolded me again for using normal garlic, I put the basket of garlic in front of her and said, peel it yourself, I can’t do it. Later, when my husband came home, she told him that you should control your wife. She is becoming zuban daraz.
