Lady doctor
A female doctor
British English
Used for British female doctors who came to the subcontinent to practice medicine; lady doctor i.e. a "lady" doctor for ladies
I am a head of the department of medicine in a large public sector hospital in Lahore. A few days ago, mid-rounds, I told the attendee to change a few medicines of a patient. The patient snatched the file out of my hands and said that he didn’t want to be examined by me. He didnt wanted to be seen by the lady doctor and wanted the baray doctor sahib (the bossman doctor. The attendant had to tell him that I was the baray doctor sahib.
I started working in a small rural health facility after graduation. There were two medical officers there, me and another male doctor. He got all the patients, men and women. Only the gynecology and obstetrics cases were referred to me. It was very frustrating, since I had minimal training in gynae. When I asked him the reason, he said, ‘Well, you are the lady doctor here. So, you’re going to get those cases whether you like it or not.
