daayan
witch / evil woman
Sanskrit
Derived from the ancient Sanskrit word dakini (डाकिनी), originally meaning a supernatural female spirit. As the language evolved into Prakrit and later into Hindi and Urdu, "dakini" morphed into "daini" and eventually "daayan".
My in-laws thought that I had cast a spell on my husband because he would side with me in domestic conflicts. My sister-in-law would say that I am a witch who wants to destroy their home.
