used; meant as a derogatory term for a woman considered to be of lose character
Indo-Aryan ← Prakrit calla- ← Skt. cal- "to move"; lit. "running, current," slang "cunning, fast."
I will not forget this incident. I was sitting in a public transport van and a woman accused a man sitting behind her of inappropriately touching her. The reason I remember this incident is that after she got off at the next stop, all men in the van started commenting that she was a Chalu Aurat (woman) because a woman of good character would never say such a thing in public. make that make sense!!
